How
do I make an appointment?
Call our office between 7:30am and 4:00pm. Please see the New
Patient Info section
of this site for further information.
What
is physical therapy?
Physical therapy is the physical evaluation and treatment of movement disorders.
At OPTM, we specialize in orthopedic and sports injuries. We will evaluate your
physical condition to determine what structures are injured, weak or generally
not working as they should. Then, we will design a treatment plan specific for
your condition. This plan will include education regarding independent care for
yourself and specific therapeutic techniques to improve pain, swelling and movement
limitations.
Are
the therapists specialists?
All the therapists on staff are specialized in evaluating and treating musculoskeletal
problems. Some of the therapists are also Orthopedic Clinical Specialists,
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists and Certified Athletic Trainers.
Will
physical therapists perform my treatment?
We feel very strongly that physical therapy should be performed by professional
physical therapists. There may be technicians who help with modality setup or
execise, but your care will be provided by a physical therapist at all times.
Will
I see the same therapist at all of my visits?
Optimally, you'll be treated by the same therapist at each visit. We want to
accomodate your schedule and there may be times when you are unable to attend
available treatment sessions with your therapist. You may be scheduled with
a different therapist when this occurs. All
therapists
communicate specific directions to each other regarding patient care to preserve
your continuity of care.
What
can I expect during a physical therapy visit?
Physical therapy treatments vary depending on the type of medical condition
and the patient's goals. Typically, a physical therapy session lasts between
60-90 minutes. The average treatment consists of a half hour of exercises
focused on strengthening, flexibility, and motor control of specific muscles
and joints.
In addition, a half hour of manual therapy is incorporated consisting of
soft tissue and joint mobilization, strengthening and stretching. Education
in self care will include body mechanics, proper body
positioning to decrease the stress to the involved tissue and exercises.
The treatment session also includes various
modalities such as heat, ice, electrical stimulation and ultrasound to help
reduce and control the symptoms.
What
should I wear?
This depends upon your area to be treated. If it is your neck, shoulder or
arm you should wear a tanktop and exercise bottoms. If it is your low back
or lower extremities, you should wear shorts and a t-shirt. Always wear appropriate
shoes for exercise.
